Just as Song Dong’s monumental installation work Waste Not at the Carriageworks arts centre is making splashes in and beyond Sydney, not far away, his another solo show, Dad and Mum, Don’t Worry About Us, We Are All Well, is on view at the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asia Art. This unique exhibition, conceived and curated by 4A Director Aaron Seeto, contains a number of his highly regarded previous works and provides us with invaluable insights into his three decades’ art practice. I was fortunate to be on site at the opening on 5th January and recorded a part of Song Dong’s artist talk, in which he touched upon family memories that hinted how and why many (if not all) of his works involved personal and family stories.
As part of the 2013 Sydney Art Festival, Song Dong Waste Not is now on show at the Carriageworks art centre from 5th January to 17th March. And Dad and Mum, Don’t Worry About Us, We Are All Well is at the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art until 30th March.
